Great app that reduces brightness on multiple monitors with one mouse click. I think it deserves a menu bar icon that complies with OSX standards, i.e. black & white and vertically centered.

Its simple, it does what its supposed to! Really nothing more to say. I put the dimmer on max and the computers brightness on min (short of turning it black), then I dimmed it more with the application, and it dimmed it all right, but unlike the computer didnt go completely black, even on maximum darkness. Perfect! This really expands how low you can go, which is wonderful. Who wants burnt eyes? And yet, who wants a black screen? This app provides the happy medium. :)
it good and all but it dosent work when you use exposé. I dont know if that supose to happen or not. But either than that its a cool app.
The app works great, and worked even better when I was running Snow Leopard, but once I upgraded to Lion, the dimmer only dims the main screen. So if you have lets say safari as a full screen app, and iCal as a full screen app, it goes back to your normal light settings. The dimmer only works on the main screen, once you shuffle over to a side screen, it "disables".. Im sure there will be a fix for this soon (hopefully), but other than that, great little program.
The app works in Lion/Mountain, but has some potential show-stoppers that should be considered: 1) As mentioned in the other reviews, in some situations the dimming wont apply. Two other cases that Ive found: If you swipe or use keyboard shorcuts to switch between desktops ("Spaces") the screen will flash to the normal minimum brightness during the switch, and theough the rest of the screen is dimmed the cursor is obnoxiously bright. 2) Its not a proper status bar background app (menulet)- the author didnt disable the dock icon. If you notice in the screenshots theres a small blue D icon after the System Prefs icon on his dock. Fortunately, you can disable the dock icon by doing the following: Open the Applications folder in Finder. Find Dimmer than Dim app, control-click on it and choose Show Package Contents. Open Contents folder, then open the Info.plist file in a text editor. After the line "<string>NSApplication</string>" and before "</dict>" add these 2 lines: <key>LSUIElement</key> <string>1</string> Now when you start the app the annoying dock icon wont appear. You can still quit it from the Dimmer menulet menu.
Settings should allow you to hide the dock icon while running the app. The menu bar icon is all you really need to control the app.
EXCELLENT EYESEIGHT PROTECTION
This app is cool because I always wondered why I couldnt dim it to a greater extent than my macbook allowed. But, they advertised the idea of being able to make it even brighter as well by "breaking the brightness limit" as well as being able to "break the minimum level." The app at highest brightness is the exact same as the max brightness without using the app. So its cool because I can break the minimum level, but you lied about it being able to make my screen any brighter...
pls make it so the icon doesnt have to be in the dock all the time!!
Ive been using Shades, which hasnt been updated for a long time. I discovered Dimmer than Dim and decided to give it a try. Although DtD is an app that executes much faster than Shades, it isnt as complete. I hope the author adds the same features (keyboard shortcuts, % indicator, choice of menu icons) to convince me to finally switch.
☆ Many Thanks for save my eye! This App is very useful for my big screen iMac. Hope you let me disable the Dock icon in the next update. Thanks! .. ◕‿◕
but when I use Expose the brighteness control falls back to default. Dont really mind it though as that is usually a quick transition. 5 stars
I love that this works on both my monitors. Its free and its awesome. Thanks. One suggestion: Move this listing to Utilities.
It does make it darker but all it does give a grey tint over everything making the clarity of your screen terrible. And considering it just puts a tint on your screen and cannot change the factory minimum brightness on your computer it doenst give you more battery life time either....its quite usless. You can see this by putting your actuall screen on low and then out your screen in negative (control+alt+cmd+8) and then turn dimmer than dim on and off. You will see what i mean.
Its like putting on a pair of sunglasses onto your monitor! Didnt see the need for this app, but I like it. Ive be too lazy to deal with setting up my new HP monitor so this app is a "piece of cake"! No need to deal with monitor controls or PC software thats not written for a Mac. "Dimmer than Dim" is so easy even a caveman can do it! App really should be in the Utilities category instead of the Education category! Would be nice if we could also adjust the tint to be warmer or cooler—sort of like a photo filter on a camera or in Photoshop. Might be useful if you use a laptop or iPad for a still or video monitor on live shoots.
So much better then paying 3 dollars for the same thing!
Delivers what it promises, but I wish it was hidden from the dock. More importantly, I wish the cursor was dimmed as well as my screen...
I frequently get eye strain from looking at the computer and I personally can attest to the fact that this application helped to give my eyes a rest, think you very much for this application, the only thing I could ask for is a fix to a situation wherein if I enter mission control the screen reverts to its original brightness and gives the eyes quite a shock this also happens when switching spaces please fix this, other than that this is a very helpful app thanks again.
...I dont see the point of an app that makes it so you cant use anything else on your computer at all when youre using it. I installed this app and tried to use Firefox. It would show me the name of the new tab I clicked on, but wouldnt change it over to that tab until I raised the brightness level by one. Still wouldnt actually let me click on and use anything, though. Uninstalled it quickly, this app is worthless to me if I cant use anything else when its turned on.
Love at first sight. My eyes defenitely love this. Thank you.
