Dimmer Than Dim App Reviews

57 Customer Reviews:

This app is meant to do one thing, dim the screen of an overly bright mac. However, it does not let you adjust the dim seperatly on multiple monitors. This eleminates a key use case, wanting to dim the main screen when watching something on an attached TV.

Perfect but Pricy.

Just what I was looking for. A little pricy though.

When I turnED the dimmer on by clicking on the app menubar icon, it simply dims screen. Its a cheaper app that apply the same dimming effect to screen

As a biochemistry/civil engineering PhD student I am constantly reading and writing papers. I use my 24” Asus monitor at home connected to my MacBook Pro and find that the screen brightness on the Asus is way too bright even on “0” brightness. MS Word 2011 has an option for a blue background with white text but I find the contrast just as harsh as black on white. For Adobe Acrobat, you can change the background color to anything you want, but Figures and Tables still remain white; again, the contrast is annoying and almost defeats the purpose of changing the background. With Dimmer than Dim I can adjust the screen brightness below what is possible with my monitor-Perfect! As others have mentioned, an update would be nice to keep the brightness consistent from desktop to desktop. One minor downfall is that when my MBP is set up as the “secondary” screen, the app does not affect it. Trying to switch the brightness on the 2ndary monitor does not work and only adjust the primary screen. However, because my MBP is the secondary monitor there is no need for adjusting brightness because I can manually adjust it with the standard brightness keys. This makes me wonder what it is like for multiple external monitors though. Still, it does everything I need it to so, 5 stars!

This app is great, does everything it is touted to do - and does it spectacularly. Only one gripe, this app would be perfect if the dev could address it: -Remove the icon from the dock (the task bar already has an icon for it, no need to have a meaningless icon in the dock) UPDATE: To remove the icon from dock open Info.plist for the app in textedit (you must change the restrictions in ‘more info’ so you can read and write) and paste "<key>LSBackgroundOnly</key><string>1</string>” on the sixth line right below <dict> Then move info.plist to the trash then back to the Contents folder. Obviously make sure the app is closed while doing this. And boom, app open, but dock icon invisible. Cheers!

it is exactly what i’m looking for to reduce eye strain, but if apps are in full screen mode the dimmer doesn’t work. also, as raised in a comment below the dimmer doesn’t work for spaces. the support link directs me to a site full of ad links; hopefully the developer would read this and be able to introduce updates that address these issues.

Does not work with full screen apps.

Dimmer Than Dim does not work with full screen apps, which I—and many others, I presume—use exclusively. Otherwise, great.

The guy - or gal - who created Dimmer Than Dim gets it. When you’re looking at a browser (like Google) that turns your screen into a glaring bright white assaulting your eyes, even turning the screen brightness down to the lowest level (on a Mac, at least) doesn’t cut it. Screen time at night is messing with people’s sleep cycles in a major way, and for the life of me I don’t understand why Apple and other manufacturers don’t get it. When you absorb light your brain limits the production of the neurotransmitters (like serotonin) that naturally help your body sleep. The more light, the less serotonin. The less of serotonin, the less quantiy and quality of sleep you’re going to get. It’s that simple. So massive kudos to Dimmer Than Dim for comprehending the simple, simple fact that we don’t need to light up the night sky with our laptops - we only need as much brightness as is necessary to view material comfortably. Thank you!

As title says, it doesn’t work on full screen apps but does work well for a single desktop. I’m disappointed a system-wide dim wasn’t included in a paid app and would only recommend it for a more basic setup.

I currently have Dual 27” Thunderbolt Displays. I didn’t see any info regarding not supporting Dual Monitors. I took the plunge at $2.99. Total waste of money for me. Please add Dual Monitor or Triple Monitor Support.

This application does everything that it promises to do, and its simple UI is great. My ONLY qualm with this application is that it still shows up on the dock when running. Because of the fact that its a great for simply running in the background, I would prefer if it was JUST in the status bar, or with a preference setting checkbox that would show/hide it on the dock when running. But, as I state in the title, this is a completely nitpicky thing on my part. Would still recommend this to others, but I do hope that the developer sees this response and takes the idea into account. Thank you for the great app!

My new monitor’s lowest brightness setting was still too bright for my eyes. But with this app, I can go as low as I want. A real eyesaver when using the computer at night or in a dark room. Absolutely worth the $2.99.

I suffer from migraines and bright lights can trigger them. Sadly my job is computer based, but this app solves that pesky brightness issue. No thrills or frills just does what it says it will do. I paid $2.99 for this app and I think it is worth every penny.

It does what it advertises, unfortunately it doesn’t work with external monitors on the MacBook Pro. I’m running Mavericks, so the icon appears in the status bar of both monitors, but the program is only able to dim my laptop’s screen. Hopefully this feature will be added in a (near) future release. Also I can’t find a way to contact the App’d developer, as the “Support” link in the App Store goes to a nonexistent website.

Dims the screen, but causes kernel panics if left to run too long. Have yet to figure out what that limit is, but for a dimming app that isn’t essential it’s not worth it.
